Before Moving Day
Pets can sense the stress and disruption of a move. Starting preparations early helps them adjust.
- Update microchip information with new address
- Get copies of vet records for your new vet
- Research pet-friendly parks near your new home
- Register for Austin Animal Center services
- Stock up on pet supplies (food, medication, treats)
- Keep routine as normal as possible
On Moving Day
Moving day is chaotic with open doors, strangers, and heavy items. This is the most dangerous time for pets.
- Keep pets in a quiet, closed room away from the action
- Consider a pet sitter or boarding for the day
- Transport pets in your own vehicle, never the moving truck
- Bring water, food, and a familiar blanket
- Keep cats in carriers and dogs on leashes during transitions
- Do not let pets out at the new home until movers are done
