Packing Materials You Need
Before you start packing fragile items, make sure you have the right materials. Skimping on packing supplies is the number one cause of moving damage.
- Double-walled boxes (stronger than single-wall)
- Packing paper (never use newspaper - the ink stains)
- Bubble wrap for extra protection
- Dish dividers and glass cell kits
- Packing tape (at least 2-inch width)
- Marker for labeling "FRAGILE"
Packing Dishes and Glasses
Dishes and glasses are the items most commonly broken during a move. Here is the professional technique our packers use.
Line the bottom of the box with crumpled packing paper for cushioning. Wrap each dish individually in packing paper, securing with tape. Stack plates vertically (like records) rather than flat. Fill all gaps with crumpled paper. The box should be snug with no movement when you shake it.
Packing Electronics
Electronics are both fragile and valuable. Proper packing protects against both physical damage and static.
- Use original boxes if you still have them
- Take photos of cable connections before unplugging
- Wrap each item in anti-static bubble wrap
- Use soft items (towels, blankets) as extra padding
- Keep remotes and cables in labeled zip bags
- Never pack electronics in extreme hot or cold vehicles
